Text Portrait Generator

Text Portrait Generator is an online tool for converting photos into text-based ASCII art. Simply upload a photo from your device or use one of the sample images provided, and the generator will convert the light and dark areas of the image into a sequence of characters that form a portrait.

The result can be created in a simple style using standard characters, or made more unique with a variety of character options, colors, and effects.

Create an ASCII Portrait from a Photo

It’s easy to use:

  1. Upload a photo in JPG, PNG, or WebP format.
  2. Select the character set you want to use.
  3. Choose a color mode for the ASCII art display.
  4. Adjust the resolution, contrast, brightness, and font size.
  5. Add effects if needed.
  6. Save the result in one of the available formats.

The generator uses the image’s brightness values to determine which characters to use. Darker areas will use denser characters, while lighter areas will use lighter characters.

Character and Color Options

There are 11 character sets available, including Standard, Dense, Dots, Minimal, Blocks, Math, Binary, Braille, Hearts, Stars, and Lines. You can also enter your own characters using the Custom Characters option.

For color, there are five modes available:

  • Mono Dark for light characters on a dark background
  • Mono Light for dark characters on a light background
  • Original to preserve the photo’s original colors
  • Palette to use a specific color palette
  • Heatmap to apply color gradients based on brightness levels

In addition, Edge Detection, Emboss, and Posterize effects are available to give the final result a different look.

Adjust Output Details

Several settings can be used to customize the appearance of the ASCII portrait. Resolution determines the level of detail in the image, while Contrast and Brightness help clarify the characters that make up the portrait. Character size can also be adjusted using the Font Size setting.

For portraits, character sets like Standard or Blocks usually produce easily recognizable shapes. If you want to create a sketch-like effect, try the Edge Detection feature.

Save and Share Your Results

Once you’re satisfied with the result, you can copy the ASCII portrait directly as text or export it to several formats. Available options include Copy Text, Download TXT, Download PNG, and Download HTML.

If you want to preserve the character arrangement for reuse as text, the TXT format is more practical. Meanwhile, PNG is better suited if you want to share the ASCII art as an image.
